01/ definition

What counts as a part-time management job

A part-time management job is a senior role with real accountability on fewer than five days a week, meant to continue rather than end with a project.

On this board that means director, head-of and chief officer seats, employed on a part-time contract or engaged on a day rate.

LEVEL

Director, head-of or chief officer

The roles here carry budget, people or a function. A coordinator or assistant role on three days is part-time work, but it is not what this board lists.

02/ scope

What these roles usually own

Part-time does not mean junior.

The roles on this board typically carry the same core remit as the full-time version, delivered in fewer days with a stronger team underneath.

  • A function’s plan, budget and results
  • Line management of a team or department
  • Reporting to the board or the chief executive
  • Key outside relationships for the function
  • Senior hiring decisions in their area
  • The routine that keeps work moving on days off
  • Daily processing and execution
  • Administrative tasks
  • Specialist work to advisers or agencies
  • Same-day queries to a named deputy

03/ which model

Which model fits the role?

A part-time job is usually one employer on a set share of the week.

If the same days are spread across several clients, it is fractional work — the parent site lists fractional jobs UK.

Full-time on a fixed term is interim; full-time and open-ended is permanent.

Part-time

Our framing, not a measured rule: the lines between the four models blur, and many briefs could run two ways.

08/ decision

When a part-time role makes sense for you

People move into part-time management for different reasons.

Being honest about yours helps you pick the right role and negotiate the right pattern.

Which sounds like you?

You have run a function full-time and want to keep doing that work on fewer days, for family, study or another interest.

  • → A clear track record in the seat
  • → Firm days you can offer
  • → Comfort delegating

A part-time employed role gives you a steady anchor while you add advisory or fractional work around it. Check the contract for exclusivity before you sign.

  • → One anchor role wanted
  • → Other clients in view
  • → Your own company already set up

You want to stay in leadership but reduce your days, in your current organisation or a new one. A part-time role keeps your seniority without the full load.

  • → Long tenure in a senior seat
  • → Succession in mind
  • → A pattern you can sustain

A part-time director role can be a structured way back into senior work, with fewer days while you rebuild momentum.

  • → Recent experience you can evidence
  • → References ready
  • → A realistic first pattern

09/ tax and IR35

How a part-time executive is engaged

General position under UK rules, with the HMRC source for each point. Not tax advice — check your own case with your accountant.

01 · DEDUCTIBLE

Fees are a business expense

Fees, like a salary, are deductible against profits when incurred wholly and exclusively for the trade (HMRC BIM37000), with corporation tax at the 25% main rate.

02 · WHO DECIDES

Status turns on how the work runs

Medium and large clients make the off-payroll status determination themselves; for a small private-sector client, the executive’s own company does (HMRC off-payroll guidance).

03 · WHAT HMRC LOOKS AT

Substitution, control, mutuality

Whether a substitute could genuinely be sent, who decides how the work is done, and whether either side must offer or accept further work. HMRC’s CEST tool walks through the same questions.

04 · ON THE PAYROLL

A part-time employee is an employee

Hired on a part-time contract, the executive has the same rights as a comparable full-time worker, pro rata (gov.uk part-time worker rights), and you pay employer NI on their salary.

10/ guide

Finding part-time management jobs: what works

Senior part-time roles are advertised less often than full-time ones, and when they are, they are often phrased in ways that hide the days: “flexible”, “hybrid”, “three days to start”.

Search for the seat first and the pattern second, then read every advert for the days actually offered.

The board above does that filtering for part-time executive jobs and shows part-time roles first.

Know your route before the first conversation.

An employed part-time role gives you pro rata salary and benefits, and the law says you should not be treated less favourably than full-time colleagues because you work part-time (GOV.UK: part-time worker rights).

A day-rate role through your own company gives you more independence but brings the off-payroll rules into play.

Many leaders hold one of each.

Price yourself from published figures, not hope.

The bands on this page name their sources, and our part-time day rates guide shows how a day rate converts to a salary and back.

If a role advertises a pro rata salary, divide it by the days a week and multiply by five to see the full-time figure it implies — our arithmetic, and a quick check on whether the offer is fair.

Lead with outcomes in your application.

A hiring manager filling a part-time seat wants evidence that you have kept a function moving on fewer days: the deputy you developed, the reporting routine you set, the decisions you made between visits.

That evidence matters more than a list of responsibilities.

Finally, widen the search where it makes sense.

Seat-specific boards on the parent site cover part-time CFO jobs, part-time finance director jobs and part-time CTO jobs, and the full fractional jobs board lists part-week roles that may be offered either way.

Our own seat hubs — part-time CFO, part-time CMO and part-time COO — add rates and hiring detail for each.

10.1/ director roles

Part-time director jobs: finance, marketing and operations

Part-time director jobs cluster in three areas.

Finance director roles are the most common: a growing business needs someone to own cash, reporting and the bank relationship on two or three days, with a financial controller or bookkeeper doing the daily work.

Marketing director roles follow, usually owning the plan, the budget and agencies.

Operations and HR director roles appear as businesses scale past the point a founder can manage alone.

A director title on fewer days still carries director accountability.

If the role is a statutory company directorship, you take on legal duties to the company whatever your days.

Ask whether the title is a job title or a board appointment before you accept.

For finance and marketing seats, the parent site’s part-time finance director jobs and part-time marketing director jobs pages list current roles.

What hiring managers look for

A track record in the same seat at a similar size of business, evidence of running it on fewer days or through a team, and clarity about the days you can commit to week in, week out.

10.2/ senior roles

Part-time senior jobs beyond the C-suite

Not every senior part-time role carries a chief officer title.

Head of finance, head of marketing, head of people and senior programme or transformation roles are often offered on a shorter week, and they can be a better fit for leaders who want the work without a board seat.

The same rules apply: read the advert for the days, check whether it is employment or a day rate, and compare the pay with a published band.

A head-of role on three days at a strong business can be worth more, in experience and in pay, than a thin director title on two.

If you are moving between full-time and part-time, keep your profile honest about what you held and when.

Hiring managers notice inflated titles, and a clear, dated record reads better than a flattering one.

For hiring managers, and for executives looking for the role.

Write a short brief: the seat, what it owns, the days and pattern, and whether the role is employed or day rate. Book a 15-minute call; we search and screen against the brief and send a shortlist of three to five, each with day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position.
It is the day rate × days worked, or a pro rata salary if employed. Published UK bands include FD Capital 2026 at £600–£1,000 a day for a fractional finance director and Accountancy Capital 2026 at £400–£650 for a financial controller. The calculator above runs a pattern against a full-time salary.
An advert works when the seat is common and the pattern is attractive. For senior or unusual seats, a search reaches leaders who are not actively looking. Our part-time recruitment agency page sets out how a search runs.
Yes — part-time workers should not be treated less favourably on pay rates, pension, holiday, training and career development because they work part-time; benefits are usually pro rata. See GOV.UK’s part-time worker rights guidance.
